Haldane phases, spin chains, ladders and quantum simulators

Thierry GIAMARCHI, UNIGE

Quantum magnets in low dimensions have proven to be remarkable systems with a very rich set of physical properties. In particular, as shown by Haldane they possess spin liquid phase controlled by the topological nature of the excitations of the system. I will review the recent results in that respect, in particular some of the experiments and the corresponding theories for phenomena such as Bose-Einstein condensation and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. I will also show how one can study such systems under magnetic field and use them as quantum simulators for understanding properties of itinerant quantum particles, such as the effects of disorder.
