Probe Branes and Steady-state in Gauge-Gravity (String) Duality

Arnab Kundu, Saha Institute, India

In gauge-gravity duality, a small number of fundamental degrees of freedom (e.g. quarks) in the background of a large number of adjoint fields (e.g. gluons) is realized by introducing probe branes in a supergravity background. In this talk we will briefly review how a steady-state can be induced in the probe fundamental matter sector by introducing an external electric field. We will then show that an open string equivalence principle governs an effective thermodynamics in this steady-state. We will also argue that the corresponding open string metric defines IR-properties of the system, while the supergravity background defines the UV-properties. We will further comment on, among other things, a plausible physical interpretation of the universal piece of the corresponding free energy.
